We come for the promise of freedom, the dream of modernity, and acceptance. We come from crisis, just as we come from peace. We leave behind everything: our belongings, our friends, families, and entire futures that could have been. We arrive with nothing but hope. A dream we kept alive to keep our feet moving. Those who have leapt into the unknown know what it means to lose your life and to build one anew. We understand how easily the ground can shift from under our feet, how quickly matters out of our hands can uproot our lives. We have felt the world against us. What will you do when it turns against you?
Today, you may hate us. Tomorrow, you, too, may be forced to take your leave, just as your forefathers once did. The fabric which separates us is far thinner than you think–it is being worn out, it is ready to be torn. While we bicker and fight our brothers and sisters, the world burns, the forests die, the rich pillage, our future fades. The planet’s slow death knows no race. It knows no gender. There is no scapegoat for our sins; we have only to look in the mirror to see who killed the world. Wake up. We are all guilty. We can all be saved.
We are all one. We are all nothing.
